RECOM Fire Solutions was appointed by Manchester Foundation Trust to provide Project Management services for fire compartmentation and fire door remedial works at North Manchester General Hospital. The first commission at Crumpsall Vale quickly developed into a multi-year, multi-site programme, safeguarding patients and staff across the estate while ensuring compliance with evolving fire safety standards.
Project Details:
North Manchester General Hospital is a large, live healthcare estate that operates around the clock. Fire safety improvements had to be planned and delivered in a way that supported clinical services without disruption.
Our role began with extensive measured building surveys and architectural baselining to close gaps in historic information. This provided a reliable foundation for design and delivery. We worked closely with the Trust’s in-house Fire Safety Team to define performance standards, prioritise risks, and align remedial works with available budgets.
The programme now covers fire door remediation and replacement, compliance planning, project management, strategic planning, and the provision of fire safety information. Every stage is underpinned by collaboration with estates and clinical teams to keep safety improvements aligned with operational needs.
What we did differently
We started with a full gap analysis to identify missing or inaccurate data. This enabled us to spot risks early and plan a strategy based on accurate, up-to-date information.
Working in partnership with the Fire Safety Team, we developed a phased, multi-year programme that balances immediate life-safety improvements with long-term compliance and budget constraints. This approach ensures the Trust can plan and phase investment with confidence.
Our stakeholder engagement strategy was central to delivery. By coordinating closely with hospital management, we scheduled works to minimise disruption to clinical services. Every decision was made with patient safety, staff wellbeing, and operational continuity in mind, proving that major compliance projects can be achieved in sensitive healthcare environments.
